TOP PICKS FOR APRIL

I am very ape for April’s cinema release line up.

I am a little late with my upcoming this month, I have been lucky enough to be holidaying in Fiji. During a cyclone nonetheless but it was still delightful. I am actually writing this, holed up in the Sofitel for the second day while the storm passes through and people waiting on me hand and foot. Never been to a 5 star resort before, and I constantly feel bad for the lengths the staff go for me. They saw me writing this and asked if I was a film producer. When I tried to explain that I just run a website and do reviews, they just shook there head and told me I was a film producer. I didn’t have the heart or the communication skills to disagree with them lol.

There are 17 Cinema Release movies in April, these are the six I want to see & review:

  • The Drama (2nd)

  • Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (16th)

  • Michael (22nd)

  • Exit 8 (23rd)

  • Hokum (30th)

  • The Devil Wears Prada 2 (30th)

These are my maybe’s:

  • The President’s Cake (2nd)

  • Undertone (9th)

  • The Deb (9th)

  • Solo Mio (16th)

  • Sgt. Haane (30th)

  • The Weed Eaters (30th)

These are my don’t cares:

  • The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (1st)

  • The North (2nd)

  • You Me & Tuscany (9th)

  • Fuze (16th)

  • That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime The Movie: Tears Of The Azure Sea (30th) (seriously, what an utterly stupid title)

Let’s concentrate on the ones I anticipate the most:

The Drama

Release Date: 2nd April

Director: Kristoffer Borgli

Synopsis: A happily engaged couple is put to the test when an unexpected turn sends their wedding week off the rails.

My Take: Not a big Rom-Com guy but when done properly they are great (I loved The Proposal). It was the trailer that made me want to see this. What is the thing she reveals??? And it’s a dark comedy, now we are talking.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy

Release Date: 16th April

Director: Lee Cronin (funny that)

Synopsis: The young daughter of a journalist disappears into the desert without a trace. Eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.

My Take: I liked Evil Dead Rise and I am a sucker for a good horror. Loved Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy movies, didn’t bother seeing Tom Cruise’s one. Seeing The Mummy get remade by this director I am keen for. The trailer’s are creepy as f*&%.

Michael

Release Date: 22nd April

Director: Antoine Fuqua

Synopsis: The story of the famous musician Michael Jackson, known as the King of Pop.

My Take: Michael Jackson is a divisive character to portray. One, he was such an amazing artist and performer, but two, there was all the dodgy scandals. It will be interesting to see how they portray him. I’m glad his nephew is playing him but I am somewhat doubtful they will be able to replicate the great performer he was. Prove me wrong Antoine Fuqua and Jaafar Jackson!

Exit 8

Release Date: 23rd April

Director: Genki Kawamura

Synopsis: A man becomes increasingly desperate when he realizes he is trapped in a subway station, needing to complete a mission to get out.

My Take: I mean, this seems right up my alley. It has a good rating at 6.4 on imdb.

Hokum

Release Date: 30th April

Director: Damian Mc Carthy

Synopsis: A horror writer visits an Irish inn to scatter his parents' ashes, unaware the property is said to be haunted by a witch.

My Take: I love Adam Scott. Full stop. He stole the show in Stepbrothers whenever he appeared and that is no mean feat in a movie with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. But Severance is what cemented my love for this man’s performances.

The Devil Wears Prada 2

Release Date: 30th April

Director: David Frankel

Synopsis: As Miranda Priestly nears retirement, she reunites with Andy Sachs to face off against her former assistant turned rival: Emily Charlton.

My Take: As a straight guy from rural New Zealand it’s hard to admit I liked The Devil Wears Prada, I might as well be from Texas, but it was a f’n great movie damn it lol. It’s one of those movies I didn’t think warranted a sequel but here we are. There is a night before members only screening at Matakana Cinema’s but they have labelled it “Ladies Night”. Looks like I am dressing in disguise for this one lol.
