EXPECTATIONS
I surprisingly loved Ready or Not. I still can’t believe how good it is. I watched it again a week before coming to see the sequel. One thing that stands out is Samara Weaving. Can’t say I had seen her in anything before. I always assumed she was another Margot Robbie look-a-like who had additionally been helped along by her famous uncle (Hugo Weaving). Well I assumed wrong didn’t I. But I am humbled by my ignorance because it helps me remember to try new things moving forward.
Along with a gem of a film, I found another great actress to keep an eye out for. Her scream is absolutely gut wrenching. It’s like a raw gutteral scream like she is backed into a corner screaming for her life with a rage driven by fear and adrenaline. That was in the movie by the way, I am not a psychopath. Although I have never been tested lol. Anyway, I was wowed by the first one so I only had medium to high expectations for the sequel, because I am also well aware that sequels don’t always work…
CONTEXT
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett were developing an original movie with a sister story for Kathryn Newton and Samara Weaving to star in. When Searchlight Pictures asked Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett to direct the sequel to Ready or Not, they offered to adapt their original sister story into the 'Ready or Not' universe, and Searchlight Pictures agreed.
THE PLOT
After surviving an all-out attack from the Le Domas family, Grace discovers she's reached the next level of the nightmarish game, and this time with her estranged sister, Faith, by her side. To survive, Grace must keep Faith alive and claim the High Seat of the Council that controls the world. Four rival families are also hunting her for the throne, and whoever wins will rule it all.
THE EXPERIENCE
Did it rehash the first movie? Yes.
Did it work? Yes. For me anyway.
It is a rehash sequel but it is a good popcorn movie nonetheless.
I had literally just walked out of seeing I Swear at the cinema straight into watching Ready Or Not 2. I loved I Swear and think it maybe the best film I have seen in 2026 so that was a hard act to follow. The fact that I still gave Ready Or Not 2 a 7/10 says a lot about that.
THE MEAT
The directors: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett seem to be a solid directing duo for the horror/thriller genre. I’m glad they stopped directing Scream films, but the ones they did do I enjoyed somewhat. I’d like to see more of their future work, hopefully with Samara Weaving as well.
The sisters: Adding Kathryn Newton as the estranged sister was one of the only things that sets it apart from the first film. Their tumultuous relationship worked and events of the film were somewhat of a good therapy session for them. At first accusing each other of abandoning hating the other, they air their grievances aloud and end up working together to escape.
Samara Weaving: It’s crazy how much she commits to roles like these. I would love to see her work in a Coralie Fargeat film, her emotion and screams would fit right in. Or see her in a more serious drama type role one day, she has a lot of talent.
The ending: Because the premise was a rehash, one of the things that kept me intrigued to see the end of the movie was who would rule the world. I secretly wanted Samara’s character to do so and become malevolent at the end. But it was a bit of a let down, no great twist ending or setup for a “what happens next?” sequel. Again, it kinda mimicked the first film.
SUMMARY
The more I see Samara Weaving the more I become infatuated with her. The way she commits to a role like this is a site to see. She is also in a film called Over Your Dead Body released in April co-starring Jason Segel that I can’t wait to catch her in.
If you liked Ready or Not you will probably like this, and if you have not seen Ready or Not, you probably need to before watching this. It’s currently streaming on Disney+ so…..
